Fall activities

Ever since Jessica was three years old, she has been interested in cooking. Whenever I am in the kitchen cooking or baking, she'll ask if she can help me.

A few of Jessica's "specialty kitchen skills" include: stirring, pouring, cracking eggs (yikes!), and frosting cookies.

Jason and I decided to sign her up for 'Kids in the kitchen' cooking class at the YMCA this fall.

A class for 4-6 yr olds, met for an hour and a 1/2, once a week, for 8 weeks.

Jessica really enjoyed the class because of the hands-on atmosphere , and of course, she also loved sitting down (at the end of class) with the rest of the kids to enjoy their delicious home-made entrees.

Things like - oven fried drummies, bacon cheeseburger roll-ups, pancakes, mini cheese quiche, bistro panini, fruit dips, and veggie dips were a few of the foods they created.

The cooking class is now over. Jessica's next fall activity will be a beginning gymnastics class, 'Tumble-bugs' --also at the YMCA. Begins on Tuesday, Oct 30.

Jackson's first Fall activity this year was flag football.

Jackson enjoys playing catch with the football, as well as, punting it as hard as he can into the air. A skill he likes to refer to as "doing a cherry bomb" ???...a phrase he apparently learned at school. :)

Given Jackson's interest in a few football skills, we thought he might like to try flag football. He agreed. So, we signed him up for a Tuesday night practice, Saturday morning game schedule. And, just like Jessica's, was also an 8 week class offered through the YMCA.

In the end, Jackson did walk away with a better understanding of the game of football; he learned a few strategies and some key positions on the team.
He didn't, however, seem very interested in playing the game of football.
In my opinion, Jackson doesn't feel any warm fuzzies for this particular sport simply because he wasn't given as much opportunity to be successful as I would have hoped for -- which led him to have less confidence out on the playing field, less motivation, and ultimately, less fun...which is a shame! It's not about winning or losing when you're 6 years old! The focus should instead be on equal play time, and having fun.
And, that's my P.E. teacher two cents worth on this topic! ;)

Now that flag football has ended. Jackson's next activity will be basketball, Tuesday night practices and Saturday morning games. Starts on Tuesday, November 27th.
